Istanbul Airport has overtaken Heathrow Airport as Europe’s busiest hub, with passenger traffic figures from July showing Istanbul handled 8.15 million travelers compared to Heathrow’s 7.86 million. This shift marks a significant change in the rankings, as Heathrow experienced a 1.5% drop in passengers from the previous year, while Istanbul Airport saw a 2.3% increase. The decline in Heathrow’s numbers has been partially linked to disturbances caused by ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.
The recent figures have intensified calls for the UK government to approve Heathrow’s long-debated third runway project. Currently operating at near-full capacity with its two runways, the proposed £33 billion expansion aims to boost Heathrow’s annual capacity to approximately 150 million passengers, thereby enhancing the UK’s global connectivity, trade, and tourism. Heathrow officials have emphasized the urgency for this expansion to maintain competitive international service.
Istanbul Airport, which commenced operations in 2018, benefits from a larger site and round-the-clock operations. It currently functions with three runways, and plans are underway to add a fourth by the end of 2026. This strategic growth further positions Istanbul as a key player in the aviation sector, capitalizing on its geographical location that bridges Europe and Asia.
In contrast to Heathrow’s dip in passenger numbers, other UK airports like London Stansted and Manchester have celebrated record-breaking figures for July. London Stansted reported handling 3.1 million passengers, while Manchester Airport accommodated 3.4 million, marking their busiest month yet. These figures highlight regional variances in air travel trends within the UK and underscore the competitive landscape among European airports.
