U.S. President Donald Trump has called on Americans to accept a modest increase in gasoline prices amidst ongoing tensions with Iran, which have led to disruptions in the crucial Strait of Hormuz. During a rally in New York, Trump emphasized that paying “a tiny little bit more” at the pump is a necessary sacrifice to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. He also floated the idea of declaring the Strait of Hormuz as “a territory of the United States” following a potential victory over Iran.
Iran has dismissed Trump’s assertions, maintaining its control over the waterway. Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi stated that Iran would continue its blockade until the U.S. acknowledges what he termed the reality of its defeat. Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi expressed that Tehran has not yet decided to return to negotiations with the U.S. He further mentioned that shipping through the strait would not resume unless Washington complies with Iran’s conditions.
The standoff has significantly impacted tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital corridor for global oil and natural gas shipments. This disruption has led to a surge in crude prices, subsequently increasing pressure on fuel costs. The average gasoline price in the United States has climbed to approximately $4.08 per gallon, marking a 29% rise compared to the previous year. Brent crude prices are similarly on track for a substantial weekly increase.
Iran is also experiencing economic repercussions. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has attributed the country’s rising inflation to the U.S. blockade, as well as sanctions and restrictions on Iranian oil exports. In response, the Trump administration has threatened to impose additional financial measures against Tehran, as diplomatic efforts to achieve a ceasefire remain at an impasse.
